  • Can I use a credit card in Tanzania?

Here at Mount Meru Game Lodge we accept Visa and Mastercard, as do most bigger restaurants and shops (we do not accept American Express). At curio and craft markets and food stalls, however, you would most likely need to pay in cash. It would be a good idea to bring cash with you (US dollars are accepted but only the notes issued post 2007 – or even 2013 to be on the safe side). For example, when hiring a car, buying fuel or visiting the doctor you will need to pay in cash. Tipping at a restaurant would be in cash, even if you have paid your food bill via credit card. (We have a tip box at reception for the collection of tips which are split equally amongst all staff each month).

  • Besides the tours we offer, what is there to do around Usa River?
    1. We are on the doorstep of Mount Meru and Arusha National Park. The Momella gate of the Park is a mere 15-minute drive from the Lodge. 2. The 18-hole Kilimanjaro Golf course is 15 minutes away. The club house offers a scenic spot for lunch or drinks (all are welcome). You will need a driver to take you there, which we can arrange.
    3. Horse riding with Kaskazi Horse Safaris – outride of 2 hours around Dolly Estate where you’ll see wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and even eland plus lots of bird life. Highly recommended if you enjoy horse riding.
    4. Visit bustling Arusha where you’ll find restaurants, international hotels and the Maasai Curio Market and the Cultural Heritage Centre, which has an impressive collection of African art, carvings and sculpture, plus a series of curio shops and stalls.
