Activities
We’ve put together a selection of exciting day trips using the Lodge, which is nestled in the foothills of the majestic Mount Meru, as your base. At over 4 500m, this volcano is home to diverse ecosystems starting in high-altitude shrub lands through lush tropical forest down into the iconic African Acacia steppe.
Coffee tour
You’ll have renewed appreciation for your morning Americano after taking a tour of a local coffee farm and learning how farmers plant coffee trees, take care of the plantation, and pick ripe coffee berries; and how the processes of drying, roasting and grinding produce the final aromatic result. Make your own cup of coffee under the expert supervision of the experts, sit back and enjoy (2-3 hours)
Cultural & educational walks
We offer a unique outing into Usa River, a small township of approximately 20 000 inhabitants located a few minutes on foot from the Lodge. These walks provide a unique insight on what authentic life for Tanzanians entails. Offered free of charge to Lodge guests, they are guided by our own staff and are immensely enjoyed by all who participate in them (1-2 hours).
Beetopia
On the edge of the Arusha National Park is BEEtopia, specialists in stingless bee-keeping and stingless-bee honey, which is delicious and beneficial with its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Under the guidance of BEEtopia’s entomologists, you’ll learn all about these fascinating creatures. Take along a picnic and enjoy the grounds. Tours are conducted in English, Kiswahili and German (1-3 hours).
Mountain biking
Hop on and head out to explore the breathtaking forests, winding trails and local farms and villages at the foot of Mount Meru and surrounding areas, all on our Lodge doorstep. These cycle tours are led by experienced guides with a wealth of local knowledge, and can be tailored to all fitness levels. Regularly serviced geared bicycles and helmets are provided (2-3 hours).
Forest walk
A 15-minute drive away, near the market town of Tengeru, you’ll find picturesque Lake Duluti, a volcanic crater lake. Enjoy the coolness of the surrounding forests on foot with plentiful bird and monkey sightings. Our naturalist will lead the way and share fascinating facts behind the flora and fauna you’ll encounter in the area. Tailored to all fitness levels (1,5- 2 hours).
Canoeing safari
Lake Duluti is in a small peaceful volcanic crater lake that is located close to Arusha town. Guides will escort you on a canoe ride where you can view abundant bird life and the pristine surrounding forest. It is the best way to spend a relaxing morning or lazy afternoon on the water, getting in touch with nature. All equipment and life jackets are provided (2-3 hours).
Golf
Nominated as one of the top 10 golf courses in Africa, the Kilimanjaro Golf and Wildlife Estate is located a short drive from the Lodge. It comprises an 18-hole championship golf course together with a real estate development set within an area of outstanding natural beauty. Guests of the Lodge wishing to play a round of golf are invited to do so during their stay.
Arusha city tour
Introducing an insider tour of Arusha, a 40-minute drive away. Visit the Cultural Heritage Centre, an enormous exhibition of art and sculpture from across the African continent, the Maasai Market for handcrafted décor and design, the iconic Clocktower landmark, the Arusha Museum, and local businesses and markets to gain a true feel for the life and times of Arusha (half or full day).
